Cat-Cow Stretch
"Spinal mobilization through flexion and extension"
The Cat-Cow Stretch is a gentle, flowing movement that alternates the spine between flexion (arching) and extension (rounding). This movement helps lubricate the spinal discs, strengthens the back and neck muscles, and improves overall spinal flexibility. It is one of the most widely recommended exercises for warming up the spine and relieving back stiffness.

Start on your hands and knees in a tabletop position. Keep wrists directly under shoulders and knees under hips.
Inhale deeply, dropping your belly toward the mat while lifting your chin and chest to look upward (Cow Pose).
Exhale slowly, drawing your belly button toward your spine and arching your back toward the ceiling (Cat Pose).
Tuck your chin toward your chest, letting your head release gently.
Continue flowing between Cow on inhalations and Cat on exhalations for 10 complete breath cycles.
Biomechanical Form & Execution Analysis

Key Alignment Focus Points
- Coordinate movements with inhalation and exhalation
- Distribute flexion/extension through entire spine
- Push floor away with hands to engage shoulders
Common Form Mistakes to Avoid
- Moving only from lower back while upper spine remains flat
- Hyperextending neck in Cow phase
- Rushing through movements without control
Biomechanical Benefits
- Increases range of motion and mobility in the thoracic and lumbar spine
- Stretches and strengthens back, neck, and core stabilizer muscles
- Promotes healthy spinal alignment and posture
- Massages the abdominal organs and coordinates breathing with movement
Precautions & Safety
- Keep movements smooth and controlled; do not force extreme end-ranges of motion.
- If you have a neck injury, keep your head in alignment with your spine rather than looking straight up.
- Place a folded blanket under your knees if you experience knee pressure.
